The South Asian A Cappella competitive circuit currently consists of over 200 teams from across the nation as well as acclaimed bid competitions and musical showcases, which run annually from January through early March. Upon completion of the year’s official bid competitions, the highest ranking teams in the circuit receive an invitation and the chance to compete for the national title. All-American Awaaz (A3) is the national championship where teams have the opportunity to showcase their talents and culture, perform in stunning theaters in front of hundreds of spectators and a judging panel of highly qualified musicians, and compete for a grand prize and the title of National Champion of South Asian A Cappella.
OUR GENRE.
Over the last decade, contemporary a cappella has garnered mainstream popularity with the advent of the TV show Glee, motion picture franchise Pitch Perfect, and Grammy award-winning a cappella group, Pentatonix. The popularity has given rise to various subgenres, including South Asian A Cappella (also referred to as “Desi A Cappella”). South Asian A Cappella combines influences from various styles of South Asian music (Carnatic, Hindustani classical, Bollywood, etc.) with Western music to bring an altogether unique sound. The Association of South-Asian A Cappella (ASA) was formed in 2016 and oversees the competitive circuit, implements collaborations within the circuit and abroad, and encourages South Asian American musicians across the country to celebrate their cultural identities.
